Outcome
In India, NCDs account for 65% of deaths, yet detection often happens too late. Patients struggle with limited awareness, delayed symptom recognition, and long wait times, while healthcare providers face repetitive tasks, incomplete data, and administrative inefficiencies.
Problem
How might we empower patients and healthcare providers to enhance early detection and management of non-communicable diseases through improved health awareness, streamlined data sharing, and efficient diagnostic processes?
Reflections
Bridging the gap between patient awareness and healthcare efficiency is critical for managing NCDs.
Simplifying processes for hospital staff can significantly improve outcomes for both patients and providers.
Ensuring patients with low technical proficiency could navigate the app with ease.
What I Learned
Challenges
Next Steps
Introduce adaptive questionnaires tailored to patients’ specific symptoms and histories.
Expand the app’s reach to rural healthcare facilities, addressing gaps in diagnosis and awareness.
Further refine language support and vernacular content for inclusivity.

AI Researchers
Leading the NCD Self-Assessment App project, I focused on improving NCD detection by identifying pain points through research and conceptualizing features like pre-appointment self-assessments and data integration. I also optimised workflows for healthcare staff and designed an accessible, user-friendly interface to ensure seamless navigation for patients.
An early Non-Communicable Disease detection solution that helps enhance diagnosis accuracy and simplifies consultations.

Smart Medical Early NCD Self Check Kiosk
Through research at the medical center, we identified inefficiencies in NCD detection and management. By conducting interviews and observations with doctors, nurses, staff, and patients, we uncovered issues like late detection, missed diagnoses, and administrative challenges. This helped us understand the broader problems affecting care.
Our solution streamlines screening, improves data management, and enhances hospital workflows, allowing doctors to focus on accurate diagnosis, nurses to manage tasks efficiently, and patients to receive timely care and information.
Research and Discovery

Accessibility Enhancement
The Design Process
Focusing on UI accessibility, I ensured all components adhered to proper color contrast ratios and that interactive elements met or exceeded the recommended touch target size of 44x44px for improved usability.

Discoverability
The Design Process
Users faced challenges navigating through the questionnaires, particularly moving back and forth. To improve navigation, I repositioned the back button next to the next button for a more seamless experience. Additionally, the note feature for adding extra information was often overlooked in its original position at the bottom. To enhance visibility and usability, I moved it to the main section for easier access.

Wireframing and User Testing
The Design Process
Created mid-fidelity screens for user testing.
The usability testing focused on accessibility, discoverability and overall usability. I conducted unmoderated sessions to gather quick feedback and collect data efficiently. Testing included internal sessions with the medical team and external sessions with 4 regular patients who visit the hospital more than twice a month.

By analyzing the hospital service process, we identified inefficiencies in workflow and patient care, including challenges in collecting and sharing patient history, lack of accessible NCD risk assessments, and reliance on manual data entry. These issues led to longer wait times, incomplete records, and delayed diagnoses, emphasizing the need for streamlined processes to improve outcomes and reduce administrative burdens.
